These caribou (Rangifer tarandus) snuck up on us while we were
sampling fish on the North Slope.
They were so quiet when they were walking past our boat
I didn’t notice them until at least 30 had already passed
since I had my head down identifying fish.
That day we saw about 2,000 caribou from the ground and from a helicopter.
