These caribou (Rangifer tarandus) snuck up on us while we were sampling fish on the North Slope. They were so quiet when they were walking past our boat I didn’t notice them until at least 30 had already passed since I had my head down identifying fish. That day we saw about 2,000 caribou from the ground and from a helicopter.

The second picture of a caribou with a magnificent set of antlers is from a video taken in July 1993, near a visitor center in Denali park. Video taken by Don Erickson.

A Humpback whale (the back half of it, at least), taken from a video taken by Don Erickson in July 1993, from a fishing boat out of Seward, Alaska.
An otter in the harbor at Seward. From a video taken by Don Erickson in July 1993.
A pair of Steller sea lions in the harbor at Seward. From a video taken by Don Erickson in July 1993.
These two pictures are from a video taken by Don Erickson in July 1993, in Denali Park. Both are from a long distance, which is the proper way to take pictures of Grizzly bears in the wild. The first picture is a large male. The second picture is a female, with two cubs which looked old enough to be last year's cubs.
